Good Show in Store for Equine Competitors at Countryside Live

15th Oct 2009

This is only the second year for the equestrian section – although Countryside Live has been running for seven – so it is a testament to the popularity of the venue that 2008 competitors are not only keen to return, but that favourable word has obviously spread further afield.

Some 180 ponies are set to appear this time and two classes -- the small native and 15hh workers --  have literally doubled in size. The newly-introduced working class for coloured ponies has also made an encouraging start.

Worker classes in general have really taken off, particularly as they give local riders the chance to jump a good course indoors, under lights and in front of a large audience  – an opportunity usually only associated with championship shows.

The first day is devoted to native ponies, both flat and working, and on Sunday, ridden and working coloureds, together with the open workers up to 15hh, take centre stage.

With everything being held indoors, both competitors and spectators are assured of top-class conditions, and some superb competition is assured.

On each day, former Olympic show jumper Graham Fletcher gives masterclasses, which are sure to draw a big crowd once again. Spectators can also enjoy the ever-popular dog agility competitions twice-daily.

Other events around the showground include a huge range of tradestands, sheep dog demonstrations, falconry displays as well as cookery demonstrations and regional speciality foods for sale.

Car parking is free, and a free shuttle bus will run from Sainsbury’s car park to the showground’s Blue entrance. Gate admission prices are £8.50 (adult); £4 (children) and £23 (family). The show is open from 9am to 5pm on the Saturday, and 9am to 4.30pm on Sunday.
